Susan the coeliac
The coeliac life, mostly figured out

Gluten-free and getting on with it

I'm Susan: 50s, coeliac since 2014, and still working out how to eat a decent croissant. This is where I write about the bits nobody warns you about: eating out without the awkward waiter conversation, what actually happens to your body in your 50s on top of all this, and the recipes that made it feel normal again.

Four things I write about

1

Eating out & travel

Where's actually safe, what to say to staff, and the gluten-free wins from holidays that went smoothly.

2

Recipes & product finds

What's genuinely good (not just "edible"), and which supermarket own-brand swaps are worth the extra pound.

3

Coeliac life admin

Diagnosis, prescriptions, appointments, the paperwork nobody explains properly. The boring-but-essential stuff.

4

Real talk: coeliac + midlife

Energy crashes, hormones, socialising when half the room doesn't get it, and why "just have a salad" is not helpful, thanks.

New posts straight to your inbox

No spam, no more than once a week: just new posts, honest product reviews, and the odd rant about pub menus.

Diagnosed at 39, after a decade of doctors telling me it was “probably stress.” Turns out it was gluten quietly wrecking my gut the whole time. I started writing this because I couldn't find anyone talking about coeliac disease and turning 50, and still wanting a life that didn't revolve entirely around what I couldn't eat. 12 years on, I've got the eating-out thing mostly sorted, a drawer full of gluten-free flour blends, and a lot of opinions about supermarket bread. Have a look around.
